화가 조향숙‥바렌과 목판화

우리나라 고목판 인쇄에서는 머리카락을 밀랍과 결합하여 굳혀 만든 문지르개, 즉 머리카락 바렌(이하, 바렌)을 사용하였다. 바렌은 신체 일부인 머리카락으로 제작되었기 때문에 상징성이 큰 판화 용구이다. 머리카락은 인간 삶의 체계에서 여러 의미들을 포함하고 있다. 기억, 정신, 욕망, 인종, 힘의 문제 등에 머리카락이 관여하기도 한다.

 

When it comes to ancient woodblock printing in Korea, a baren with hair(the following, a baren), equipment to rub made in the solid combination of between hair and beeswax, has been used. A baren is a meaningfully symbolized tool for engraving because it is made by using one of your body parts: hair. Hair itself includes a variety of meanings in the life system of human beings; it is also involved in the issue of memory, spirit, appetite, race, and power etc.

 

작지만 아주 큰 힘을 갖고 있는 매체가 바로 머리카락이다. 그러므로 머리카락은 실존 인물의 삶, 기억, 정신이 담겨있는 물체이고 이를 가지고 판화를 찍는다는 것은 그 인물의 정서적 흔적을 작품에 스며들게 한다는 점에서 커다란 상징성을 갖게 한다.

 

Hair is the very medium whose size is small but power is huge. Hence hair as an object taking in the life, memory, and spirit of an existent person; using the material for engraving has significant symbolism as emotional traces of the living soul permeate in an artwork.

 

현대에 들어서 전통적인 머리카락 바렌의 사용은 거의 맥이 끊어졌다. 필자는 머리카락 바렌의 상징성과 전통을 유지할 수 있도록 제작 방법에 많은 애착과 연구에 주력해 오고 있다.

 

Today, the legacy of using a baren is almost snapped off. I have been devoting myself to developing how to make a baren with its symbolism and tradition.
