5.덩어리로 만들어 놓은 밀랍을 중탕하기 위해서 잘게 부순다. 그래야 잘 녹기 때문이다.

 

(To let a lump of beeswax easily melted in a double boiler, it should be broken to fine pieces.)

 

6.중탕으로 녹여진 밀랍을 거름망으로 한번 거르는 것이 좋다. 왜냐하면 밀랍 속에 있는 불순물을 깨끗이 걷어내야 밀랍으로 제작했을 때 이물질이 없어야 종이와의 마찰에서 찢어지거나 하는 불편함이 없다.

 

(You had better filter beeswax melted in a double boiler one time. It is because paper would not be torn by rubbing if impurities in beeswax are clean filtered.)

 

7.깨끗이 거른 밀랍 중탕에 만들어 놓은 머리카락 덩어리를 넣고 천천히 뒤집어 가면서 속속히 깊게 밀랍이 들어가도록 살짝살짝 눌러 준다. 여러 차례 반복하면서 충분히 밀랍을 머리카락 속에 밀어 넣어주면서 모양을 잡아준다.

 

(Put a lump of hair already made into the clean sifted beeswax, and slightly hold the lump down in order to get the melted beeswax deeply permeate the oval chunk all around, slowly turning it over. With repeating the previous direction several times, push beeswax enough into the inside of hairs, forming a shape.)

 

8.다 만들어진 바렌은 종이에 두면 붙기 때문에 비닐 위에 잠간 놓았다가 굳기 전 다시 손으로 형태를 잡아준다.

 

(Put a finished baren on vinyl for a moment because it sticks to paper, and then reform the instrument by hand before it becomes hard.)

 

9.처음에 사용할 때는 길이 들지 않았기 때문에 약간 뻑뻑하게 종이에 붙을 수도 있지만 사용할 수로 사람의 손길을 따라 잘 움직인다.

 

(As first used baren isn't broken in well, it could adhere to paper in a bit dry and hard way, but the more you use the tool, the better it works in your hand.)

 

10.오래 사용해서 머리카락이 바깥으로 많이 나오고 밀랍이 뭉개져서 없어진 경우에는 중탕한 밀랍에 담가 재생시킬 수도 있다.

 

(You can reproduce a baren by dipping it in melted beeswax if the tool is so long used as to get a lot of hairs outstretched, and beeswax squashed.)

홍익대학교 대학원에서 판화전공(미술학 박사)했다. 화가는 우리나라의 전통목판화가 가지고 있던 정신, 불교적 세계관을 종합된 사유로 계승하고자 한다.
