We recognize by his choice of themes that Lee wants to address not only his fellow Koreans, but also popular culture everywhere. This enables him to break free of certain national assumptions, and participate in the global culture of pop imagery and the celebrities who inspire such imagery.

When Lee’s audience sees such virtuosity, they can only shake their heads in recognition of his high skill. Yet the paper paintings are not only about surface alone. Pop imagery returns in the form of an upside-down two-dollar bill, which brilliantly delineates the features of America’s third president, Thomas Jefferson.

First of all, it seems like it is a nod to the dollar bills printed by Warhol, who of course turned his obsession with money and pleasure into a career of great success. Second, it is a brilliant tour de force on a technical level. And finally, its association with Western pop themes links the image to a tradition strong in America for roughly fifty years. one can only speculate about why Lee chose the two-dollar billit is relatively rare in currency use in America. Perhaps he wanted to differentiate himself from Warhol, having borrowed the latter’s images of Mao and Monroe.

One has to admire the complexity of the image’s surface, as well as the remarkable technique with which Lee composes his art. The joining together of surface, iconography, and skill make for an art of more than passing importance. Lee’s use of folded, colored paper seems simple at firstuntil one recognizes the complexity of his effects, especially with differing hues.
