이승오 작가는 대중문화와 전통회화, 서구예술에 대한 성찰력이 있는 재능 있는 아티스트이다. 미국 팝아트의 대가인 앤디 워홀이 즐겨 소재로 삼던 마릴린 먼로와 마오쩌둥의 초상화를 한 단계 발전시킨 그의 작품을 보면 알 수 있다.
Seungoh Lee is a very talented painter who appreciates pop culture, traditional painting, and Western art. Indeed, two of his most striking works develop the portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Mao—images freely taken from Warhol.
이승오 특유의 종이회화는 다양하게 채색된 종이를 두텁게 포개고 접는 과정을 거치는데 그 결과물은 일반적인 평면회화에서 받는 인상과 크게 다르지 않다. 이러한 작품 외에, 연속적으로 V자 형태로 돌출하여 완성한 종이 회화도 있다. 보는 각도에 따라 두 가지 상이한 이미지를 볼 수 있는 특징이 있다.
His paper paintings are composed in an unusual way—folded paper in different colors is ingeniously arranged to give the appearance of an actual painted canvas. Additionally, in a number of the works, Monroe and Mao included, the so-called paintings are arranged in a V-shaped angle, enabling Lee to present two images, depending on how you look at the work.
예를 들어, 마릴린 먼로의 초상작품은 그림의 좌, 우에서 볼 때 다른 두 명의 마릴린이 보인다. 정면에서 보면 두 명의 마릴린이 뒤섞인 채로 보이는데 온전한 마릴린을 감상하기 위해선 한쪽에서 감상해야 한다.
For example, with the Marilyn Monroe portrait, you can see two different Monroes by looking at the images from two different sides. Viewed straight on, Lee’s audience sees a mixture of the two likenesses, which become coherent and visually feasible only when looked at from one side.

이승오는 작업방식의 특이함에도 불구하고 매우 능숙하고 노련하게 작업을 진행하는 아티스트이다. 그가 발표한 마릴린 초상화는 인물의 특성이 확연히 두드러진다. 즉, 마릴린이 희대의 성 아이콘으로 군림한 만큼이나 매혹적이고 에로틱한 느낌을 자아내고 있다.
Despite the slight eccentricity of Lee’s process, the artist clearly remains in control of his skills. His portraits of Monroe are sensuous and erotic, presenting the great icon of sex as entirely alluring.
