전통적 양식과 현대적 조형

 

 

나전칠기니 자개농이니 하는 안방 기물들에 대한 용도와 수요는 현대에 오면서 점점 사라져가고 있는 항목의 하나가 되었다.  

In contemporary era, it has been gradually disappearing the use and demand of boudoir’s utensil such as a lacquerware and cabinet inlaid with mother-of-pearl.

 

사라져가는 전통적 양식이 비단 나전칠기에 국한되는 것은 아니지만 우리들 안방 문화의 가장 대표적인 양식이 사라져간다는 것은 안타갑기 짝이 없는 일이다.  

Although it is not just restricted in a lacquerware with mother-of -pearl as those traditional styles, it makes me sorry to accept the fact that the most representative style of our traditional boudoir’s culture is disappearing in gradual.

 

그런 상황 속에서도 근래에 들어오면서 나전칠기의 방법을 현대적 조형으로 원용한 작가들이 눈에 띠는 것은 여간 흥미로운 일이 아닐 수 없다. 정현숙도 그 가운데 한 사람이다.  

In that condition, it is remarkably interesting to find out the artists who trying to invoke the method of lacquerware with mother-of -pearl into contemporary form. The artist, Jeong Hyun-Sook also is the one of those artists.

 

대체로 나전칠기의 방법을 현대적 조형으로 끌어들이는 경우는 크게 두 가지 접근으로 이루어지고 있음을 파악할 수 있다. 

In general, it can be understood of two approaching ways in adapting the method of lacquerware with mother-of-pearl to the contemporary form.

 

안방 문화가 지니고 있는 고유한 정서의 환기가 그 하나요, 나전칠기의 기술을 현대적 조형으로 전이시키는 일종의 재료의 재해석 내지는 재발견의 차원이 또 하나다. 

The one is the way evoking to keep the peculiar sentiment of boudoir’s culture, the other is the way re-interpreting of the certain material or rediscovery transferring the technique of lacquerware with mother-of-pearl into contemporary form.

 

정현숙은 어떻게 보면 이상의 두 측면을 아울러 지님으로써 그 독자의 위상을 견지해가고 있는 것이 아닌가 생각된다. 

The artist, Jeong Hyun-Sook tries to carry out both ways to adhere the peculiarity of artwork.

우선 그는 전통적인 재료가 환기시키는 독특한 정서를 결코 간과하지 않는다. 자개농이 화사하면서도 그윽한 내면의 향기를 머금고 있음은 다름 아닌 질료가 발하는 장식성에 기인되는 것임은 말할 나위도 없다. 

First of all, she pursues to evoke the peculiar sentiment of the traditional material. Surely, it is resulted from the splendid decorative effect of the material in the reason of that a cabinet with mother-of-pearl arouses the profound and fragrant inner scent.

 

그의 작품 속에는 과거의 문양이나 구성적 패턴을 구가하지는 않으나 질료 자체에서 나오는 독특한 장식성을 적극적으로 끌어들이고 있음을 발견할 수 있다.  

In her artwork, it has actively accepted the peculiar decorative effect arousing from the material itself, with ignoring at the old design or compositional pattern.

 

간결하면서도 단순한 패턴의 반복 속에서도 화사한 질료가 발하는 독특한 장식성이 화면 전체로 확대되면서 그윽한 반향을 자아내고 있다.  

In the concise and simple repetition, it was evoked the profound reverberation with expanding the peculiar decorative effect arousing from the splendid material in the whole picture.

 

그가 구사하는 조형의 패턴이 한결같이 추상적, 기하학적 구조의 것임에도 유독 나비 문양은 가장 구체적인 형상으로 떠오르고 있음이 눈길을 끌게 한다.  

In spite of pursuing consistently the abstract and geometrical structure in her formative pattern, it was kept the viewer’s eyes into the only butterfly pattern that has the most specific figure.

 

형태와 구조상으로 몇 개의 대표적인 카테고리를 정리해보면, 그물망 같은 직조의 전면화, 원형 또는 원형의 반복, 사각 형태와 그것의 증식, 작은 띠의 집성화 현상, 또는 그것의 다양한 변주 등으로 나눌 수 있다.  

Defining of a few representative categories in the fact of the form and structure, it can be divided with the entire weaving like a web, circle or the repetition of circle, square form and its multiplication, the phenomena gathering together of small band, or its multiple variations.

원형은 정방형의 화면에 가득히 채워지는 것이 있는가 하면 그물망의 구형으로 화면을 채우는 것도 있다. 사각 속의 원이란 가장 기본적인 조형 요소의 조합이라 할 수 있다.  

The circle is fully filled in the perfect square, or in the circular picture of web. The circle in square is the collection of the most basic formative element.

 

원의 중심으로부터 예리한 화살촉들이 밀집된 형상으로 밖으로 퍼져나가는 것이 있는가 하면 마치 유지 우산을 펴 위에서 본 것 같은 바퀴살 모양의 원형이 화면에 가득 참으로써 시각적 충일을 일으키는 것도 있다.  

Sometimes it was spread from the mid of circle to the outer in the figure crowded sharp arrowheads, or aroused the visual exuberance by filling the circle, as like a spoke looking down with opening an umbrella made of oil-paper.

 

원을 에워싼 그물망 조직이 출렁거리는 형상으로 다가오는 것은 평면을 벗어난 입체화의 또 다른 변주로 보아야 할 것 같다.  

In the ｅxpression of the structure of web surrounding circle, which looks like lapping figure, it can be regarded as another variation of three-dimensional solid getting away from a plane.

 

원에 이어 빈번히 구사되는 것은 사각의 패턴이다. 사각형을 안에서부터 밖으로 향하게 지속적으로 증식되어 나오게 한 반복 구조에서부터 단순한 사각의 작은 단위를 직조해나가는 형식에 이르기까지 다양한 변화를 보이고 있다.  

The square pattern is also frequently expressed as a circle. It was shown the variation in multiple ways from repetitive structure multiplied consistently from inside to outside of the square, to the form weaving a small unit of simple form of square.

 

겹치는 사각의 형태와 원과 사각형의 조합 또는 퍼즐처럼 엮어지는 사각의 형태 등이 있는가 하면 밀집된 색 띠의 구성 등 실로 다양한 변화의 양상이 펼쳐진다.  

It was revealed multiple aspects in the overlapped form, the square form which weaving as the collation or puzzle of circle and square, or the crowded form with color bands.

 

안방의 자개농에서 보던 현란한 아름다움이 연상되면서도 자개농의 문양이나 구성은 찾아볼 수 없다. 그런 만큼 현대적 감각에 의한 재해석의 새로운 양식을 만나게 된다고 할 수 있다.  

It reminds of the splendid beauty of a cabinet inlaid with mother-of-pearl in a boudoir without a design or form of the cabinet. Therefore, it can be adapted to a new form reanalyzing of the contemporary sense.

 

전통적 양식이 자아내는 독특한 정서를 내장하면서 새로운 표현의 진폭을 보여주는 그의 화면은 전통의 현대화란 놀라운 방법의 획득에 다가가 있는 것이라 해도 과언이 아니다.  

It is not too much to say that her picture approaches to the acquirement of remarkable method called as the modernization of tradition, which contains the peculiar sentiment evoked in traditional form, and reveals the amplitude of new ｅxpression.

 

많은 제약이 따르면서도 그것을 극복해가면서 이룩한 성과는 그의 치열한 작가 정신의 결정체라 할 수 있을 것이다.  

The artist achieves the great result like the crystal created in the intensive artistic sprit by overcoming many restrictions.
