The‘Before and After’  

 

‘전과 후(Before and After)’연작은 가을날 깊은 산골, 투명하고도 잔잔히 흐르는 계곡 물처럼 시간의 참됨 그 숨결을 노래하는 한편의 서사시이다.  

The Before and After series is like an epic poem that sings about the true breath of time and compares it to a transparent and gently flowing stream in a valley deep in the mountains on an autumn day.

 

물기 머금어 더욱 영롱한 그 빛깔은 고려나전(高麗螺鈿), 아니 통일신라시대로 거슬러 올라갈 수 있을 만큼 오래 된 시간, 선조의 발자취와 홀연히 가까워진다.  

The colors look more brilliant in the water. Now you suddenly find yourself closer to the footsteps of our ancestors that can be traced to the Goryeo Dynasty, or further yet, the Unified Silla Dynasty.

화면은 간결하면서 단순한 패턴의 반복 속에서도 화사한 자개 질료가 발하는 독특한 장식성은 그윽한 내면의 향기를 머금고 있다.  

The distinct decorations of the mother-of-pearls in the simple patterns that are repeated on the screen contain a secret inner scent.

 

스쳐 지나가는 시간과 윤회하는 생의 따뜻함과 희망과 구원의 메시지가 병렬된 원(圓). 이 원 안에 나비며 새의 날개나 복(福)자 그리고 삼각형에서부터 사각, 육각 등 다양한 형태의 문양들은 아이보리, 핑크 등 각양각색 컬러의 자개들로 어우러져 조화를 이루고 있다. 

Circles that simultaneously contain the passing time, the warmth of life, and the messages of hope and salvation, and other various patterns such as butterflies, wings of birds, the Chinese character for luck, triangles, rectangles, and hexagons are harmonized with the mother-of-pearls in a multitude of colors including ivory and pink.

원을 에워싼 그물망 조직의 출렁거림으로 다가오는 형상. 평면을 벗어난 입체화라는 다양한 변주로 해석되어지고 운동되는 화면엔 에너지가 넘친다.  

The shapes created by a web of rolling nets surrounding the circles are interpreted in many variations turning planes to three dimensions and the dynamic screen is filled energy.

 

이전과 후(後)의 경계에 있는 오늘의 시간과 바로 ‘나’와 내 삶의 길. 정 작가의 ‘Before and After’는 그 시간성의 정신을 통해 우리들의 마음을 다시 일깨워 생명의 연속성이라는 시간의 물결을 되돌아보게 한다.  

The time of today at the border of Before and After and the path of “I” and my life. The Before and After series of artist Hyun-Sook Jeong allows us to look back into time by awakening our heart again through the spirit of time.

 

 

 

  화가 정현숙(Hyun-Sook Jeong)

 

 

정현숙 작가는 이화여대 서양화과와 미국 펜실베니아 미술대학원을 졸업했다. 인사아트센터, 박영덕화랑 등과 파리, 동경, 오사카 등지에서 개인전을 28회 가졌고 시카고, 샌프란시스코(미국), 맬버른(호주), 상하이(상하이), 아르코(스페인) 등 다수의 아트페어와 단체전에 참여했다.  

Artist Hyun-Sook Jeong graduated from the Department of Western Painting, Ewha Women’s University and the Graduate School of Art, University of Pennsylvania. She held 28 exhibitions of her pictures in Insa Art Center and Park Yeong-Deok Studio as well as in Paris, Tokyo, and Osaka.

 

작품 주요 소장처는 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, SK텔레콤 등이다. 대진대 미술학부 교수로 재직하고 있다. 

She also participated in many art fairs and group exhibitions in Chicago, San Francisco, Melbourne, Shanghai, and Arco, Spain.
