통인화랑에서 두 번째 소개하는 패티 우터스(Patty Wouters)의 작품들은 서양식의 일직선으로만 흐르는 시간의 개념은 더 나은 미래라는 환상을 향한 앞으로의 행진인데 반해 동양의 순환하는 시간적 개념은 옛 것과 새로운 것이 공존하여 지금껏 살아온 모든 경험들이 함축된 것이다. 이 두 상반되는 시간의 개념이 형태화 된 것이 그녀의 이번 작품들이다.
그녀는 현재 벨기에의 헤일튀른하우스 미술아카데미의 교수로 재직 중이며 이화여대, 한양대, 서울대등 다양한 대학의 도예과 교환교수로 초빙되었다. 유럽과 오스트레일리아에서 27번의 개인전을 한 바 있고 벨기에, 이탈리아, 스웨덴, 네덜란드, 미국 국제 도자비엔날레 등 세계적인 무대에서 여러 차례 대상을 수상한 바 있다.
Patty Wouters works are informed by the linear time of Western Modernity, but now coupled to the more cyclical experience of time, traditionally associated with the Far East. The concept of (Western) linear time imagines us propelled relentlessly forward, in a fantasy of progress, toward ‘better’ future. We can contrast this attitude with an (Eastern) sense of time as flow ;it is a sacred conception of time, employing new and older metaphors to reflect lived experience.
These two visions of duration are reflected in the forms displayed in this exhibition. This is the second solo exhibition of Patty Wouters at Tong-In Gallery. She is currently professor at the Art Academies of Geel and Turnhout and was invited to lecture as exchange professor at Ewha Womans University, Hanyang University, Seoul National University and others. She had numerous solo exhibitions in Europe and Australia and major awards from various international art fairs and organizations.
