Intoxicating illumination delving into gestures of self-oblivion

A 20 minute drive from Jeongja Station, Bundang-gu Gyeonggi-do, towards the Gogiri amusement park, lead me to a house. From afar, it seemed as if it was surrounded by the gently ridged mountain. Just like the face of a child, freshly washed by his mother after rolling around along the hills, the family garden that was frozen during winter is now sheen with moist.

The two-storied European style house evoked a sophisticated, old-world atmosphere with its beige stone pillars. In the considerably large first floor studio, art works on birch and poplar trees were displayed side by side, in preparation for a film scene. Another studio area was set in the second floor, where the single-piece glass provides unobstructed view from all around.

“I usually work at the second floor studio during the winter. The cozy sunshine and some snow, it’s truly a piece of art by itself. I usually focus on my work after lunch until 5 o’clock, but there are times when I would wake up in the middle of the night and work on my paintings. Of course, most likely accompanied by sleepless nights,” she said.

The vitality of seductive waltz

The pieces of abstract art work on poplar trees were lined in the spacious studio, as if dancing in a festival. “Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald” by Johann Strauss II was played in the studio; the elegant melody of the waltz flowing clearly like the sunlight glowing between leaves. Gazing on the screen, you can imagine fine ladies and gentlemen out on a picnic, you can almost sense their mature emotions and the heat from all the elegant waltzing.

What does tree mean to her? ”The tree solely spreads towards its path. As from the withered winter tree sprouts the leaves and flowers, trees cheer you up and encourage you to step forward and lead a fierce life. It has the power to help heal our selves.”

After pain, the joy of being alive

The fourth movement of Symphony no. 4 by Tchaikovsky runs through the birch wood forest. Just like the seething passion that burns even more after the estrangement, whilst torn between the conflict of whether to cry out the name, the carnelian dusk writhes in the air. The psychology of anxiety, the fragments of depression pounds heavily on the bark of the tree.

Then, silence sinks in the bare heart full of cuts and bruises... only after rebirth is it pure as snow and healed. Alas, the joy of being alive!

Communicating with the root

The tree stands there shyly, with a gesture that resembles a concise language, cutting right through the deep wrinkles where rainfalls, thunders and time left their marks. Not just a single entity, but a collective image of unity stripped off of redundancy. The harmonious curve brings forth a greater image of movement with enhanced definition.

The artist revealed, “I wished to draw the path of our heart. As the painter, it is healing that I acquired while painting the forest of hearts. It was during those hours spent focusing on communicating with the root that I was able to become a tree at last. In time, I would like to introduce my works to the major galleries in Russia and then to the whole world.”
