Artist Lee Seung Oh ‘Pine Tree’ Series |To Show the Surprising Energy of Koreans

 

폐책(廢冊)들의 종이 소재에 천착하며 독창적인 작품세계 영역을 구축해 온 이승오 작가의 ‘소나무’연작이 주목 받고 있다. 

The ‘Pine Tree’series of Lee Seung-oh, who has created a unique world of art while studying the materials of paper from old books, are under the limelight.

 

종이들 서로간의 유기적 통합을 중시하며 동시에 거기에 생명을 불어넣어 조형언어를 탄생시키는 그가 한국인이 가장 좋아하는 나무 중 하나인 소나무를 작업한다는 것만으로도 눈길을 끈다. 

He has given birth to a formative language by placing importance on the organic integration among paperand giving life to it, and just the fact that he is working on pine trees, which are one of the most loved trees of Koreans, makes it interesting.

 

소나무는 기상과 절개, 충절과 끈기, 의연한 생명력과 웅장한 자태로 사랑받는 나무이다. 작가는 “온갖 풍상을 견뎌낸 소나무의 투박하면서도 두꺼운 외피에서부터 사계절 변함없는 푸름으로 자신의 색깔을 읽지 않는 고고한 자존심과 흔들림 없는 자아에서 나는 궁극적으로 한국인의 아름다움을 찾아내고 구현하고자 한다”고 배경을 말했다. 

The pine tree is loved because of what it means ? vigor and integrity, loyalty and perseverance, and its honorable vitality and magnificent appearance. The author explained, “I ultimately looked to find and reconfigure the beauty of Koreans from the self confidence and unwavering appearancethat does not lose its green color throughout all seasons, while protecting it from the harsh weather with its simple, but thick cover.”

 

이러한 소나무의 내외적인 가치를 작품세계에 담아냄으로써 관객과 소통하고 있는데 그의 소나무는 가을 들녘이나 강변 소나무 등을 선보이고 있다. 종이의 질감과 종이단면의 색채에 생명력을 불어넣음으로써 마치 자연 속 소나무의 생생함을 느끼게 한다. 

He communicates with the audience by filling this value of the pine tree in his world of art, and his pine trees show an autumn field or a riverside pine tree. By giving life to the texture of paper and the color of the paper, it emits vividness like a pine tree in nature.

 

그는“한국인의 진정한 아름다움이 소나무 안에 있다고 본다. 소나무와 한국인, 그 교감과 소통의 관계에서 한국인의 정신을 승화시키는 것을 재발견해내고자 한다. 한국인의 포용력과 강력한 리더십의 놀라운 에너지가 펼쳐 보이도록 노력하겠다”고 밝혔다. 

He stated, “I think that the true beauty of Koreans can be found in pine trees. Pine trees and Koreans, in the relationship of sympathy and communication, I aimed at rediscovering the ascension of the Korean spirit. I will strive to show the surprising energy of the magnanimous and power leadership of Koreans.”

이승오 작가는 중앙대 예술대학 회화학과 및 일반대학원 서양화학과 졸업했으며 관훈갤러리, 토탈미술관 등의 개인전과 신소장품전(국립현대미술관) 등 다수의 그룹전에 참여했다. 

Lee Seung-oh graduated from Chungang University College of Fine Arts Department of Painting and Graduate Schoolof Western Painting. He held solo exhibits at Gwanhun Gallery and Total Art Museum, while also participating in a number of group exhibits such as the New Collection Exhibit (National Museum of Contemporary Art).
