압축된 이미지 속에 담긴 산의 정기
하지만 그는 표정보다는 역시 생명의 리듬에 무게를 둔다. 붓이 만들어내는 표현을 통해 그 이면에 자리하는 대자연의 생명감, 즉 맥박처럼 힘차게 요동하는 생명의 리듬을 포착하는데 심혈을 기울인다. 물감을 찍어 바르는 그 행위가 여러 차례 반복되면서 캔버스의 두께가 만들어지고 그에 비례하여 심도가 깊어지는 것은 당연한 일이리라. 반복되는 행위를 통해 형성되는 물감의 층은 심연을 모를 산의 깊이를 반영한다. 수 천 년의 세월을 통해 형성되는 지층처럼 생명의 리듬이 겹쳐지면서 그림의 심도 또한 깊어지는 것이다.

눈에 보이는 이미지, 즉 산의 형상이 지극히 간결한데도 감상자의 마음을 끌어당기는 어떤 흡인력은 바로 물감의 층이 만들어내는 깊이감에서 비롯된다. 오일물감이라는 질료가 만들어내는 유채화의 깊이, 그리고 유채화의 맛이란 바로 이런 것임을 웅변하고 있다. 기름진 물감의 존재감은 역시 두터운 질감을 통해 만들어지는 것이다. 더러는 색채를 혼합하지 않고 튜브에서 나오는 순색을 그대로 바름으로써 색채의 순도를 높인다. 고흐의 그림에서 볼 수 있듯이 순도 높은 색채이미지에서는 생명의 반짝임과도 같은 신선함이 느껴지는 것이다. 이러한 표현기법은 발랄하고 경쾌한 원초적인 자연의 생명력, 즉 생동감을 표현하는데 효과적일 수 있다.

특히 백두산을 포함하여 설경을 제재로 하는 산 풍경은 그 이미지가 더욱 명료하다. 짙푸른 천지와 흰 눈, 그리고 산 모양을 수식하는 검은 윤곽선으로 요약되는 백두산 설경은 그의 산 그림이 지향해온 조형세계를 일목요연하게 압축해낸다. 전체적으로는 지극히 간결한 풍경이지만, 그로부터 느끼는 감동은 결코 간단치 않다.
