홍승표의 경우를 보자. 그는 원래 서예의 대가였으나 비구상화가로 전환하였다. 신비한 분위기의 홍승표는 천년사찰들의 현판을 쓴 것으로 잘 알려져 있기도 한 인물이다. 그는 30여 년간 명맥이 사그라져가는 기예(역자주: 서예를 말함)에 헌신한 후 추상화가로 변신한 것이다.
Consider Hong Seung-Pyo, 53, a master Chinese calligrapher who has turned to non-figurative painting. The hermetic Seung-Pyo is mostly recognized for his hyung-pan, historic Buddhist temple signboards in Korea. After dedicating three decades to the endangered craft, he took up abstract painting.

그는 직접 닥종이나 붓, 그리고 물감을 만들어 쓴다. 검정색은 검은 기와에서 얻고, 청색은 동록(銅綠)에서, 그리고 한국인들이 예로부터 귀신을 쫒는 부적을 만들 때 사용한 진사(수은광석)에서 적색을 얻는다.
Seung-Pyo makes his own mulberry paper, brushes and paint. The blacks are made from ground-up roof tiles, the blues are made from a brass patina, and the reds are cinnabar, a vermillion mercury ore used by Koreans as talismans to ward off ghosts and demons.
홍승표의 작품은 마치 Frantz Kline과 Jean-Michel Basquiat(추상표현주의 작가들로서 현대미술에서 가장 고가로 팔리는 작가들이다)를 섞어놓은 듯한 느낌을 준다. 한국의 전통적인 기교를 살짝 비튼 듯 한 그의 작품은 날랜 서예솜씨로 여성의 실루엣을 연상시키기도 하고, 두 마리 황소가 싸우는 듯, 플라멩고의 춤사위를 보는 듯하다.
From afar, Seung-Pyo’s works look like a cross between a Franz Kline and a Jean-Michel Basquiat, but with a traditional Korean-technique twist. His deft calligrapher’s strokes conjure women’s silhouettes, two bulls fighting or a flamingo.
